The Split Gill Mushroom (Schizophyllum commune) is one of the world’s most remarkable fungi. Instantly recognizable by the distinctive split gills beneath its fan-shaped caps, it is considered one of the most widely distributed mushroom species on Earth, naturally occurring on hardwood across every continent except Antarctica.

Although small in size, Split Gill has attracted enormous scientific interest for its unique biology and the production of schizophyllan (SPG), a naturally occurring beta-glucan extensively studied in biotechnology and medicinal mushroom research.

Although little known in the West, Split Gill is a traditional edible mushroom in parts of Southeast Asia and remains an important species for both culinary and scientific interest. In Indonesia particularly cultivated due to long shelf life in the tropics.

🌱 Cultivation

Split Gill is an aggressive wood-decay fungus that readily colonizes a wide range of hardwood substrates.

Recommended substrates include:

• Hardwood sawdust
• Master’s Mix (Hardwood Sawdust & Soy Hulls)
• Hardwood logs
• Hardwood chips

Unlike fleshy gourmet mushrooms, Schizophyllum commune produces numerous small fan-shaped fruiting bodies that develop in overlapping clusters.

It is an exceptionally vigorous colonizer and adapts well to a wide range of environmental conditions, making it surprisingly forgiving to cultivate.
