Commercial Low-Spore Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus var. HK-35) | The Professional Choice

🛡️ The Farmer’s Friend: Low Spore Technology

The Low-Spore Oyster (often referred to by its laboratory designation, HK-35) is a premium hybrid strain bred for the serious commercial cultivator. Unlike wild-type Oysters that release a “snowstorm” of spores as soon as the caps flatten, the HK-35 is engineered to produce a significantly lower spore load.

  • Worker Safety: Greatly reduces the risk of respiratory irritation for those spending long hours in the fruiting room.

  • Cleaner Facilities: Less spore dust means your fans, filters, and cooling equipment stay clean for longer, reducing maintenance downtime and increasing the efficiency of your STS High-Humidity Controllers.

📈 High Performance & Consistency

Don’t let the “low-spore” label fool you into thinking it’s less productive. The HK-35 is a heavy-hitter. At the Eco Bini Sustainability Testing Station (STS), we’ve found this strain to be one of the most consistent performers in our library.

  • Density: It produces exceptionally thick, heavy caps that hold their weight well after harvest.

  • Uniformity: Expect even, predictable flushes that make scheduling your market deliveries much easier.

  • Colonization Speed: Extremely aggressive. It “rips” through pasteurized straw or supplemented sawdust, outcompeting contaminants with ease.

🇿🇦 Adaptability & Appearance

The HK-35 is a versatile P. ostreatus variety that adapts well to the South African climate.

  • Color Palette: The caps range from a sophisticated dove-grey in cooler temperatures to a clean, creamy beige as it warms up.

  • Morphology: Produces large, meaty clusters with a classic oyster shape. Because it releases fewer spores, the caps tend to stay “tighter” and look fresher in the punnet for longer.

🌬️ Cultivation Strategy

While the HK-35 is more forgiving of lower humidity than some exotic strains, it still demands high Fresh Air Exchange (FAE).

  • Fruiting Trigger: Like most ostreatus varieties, it benefits from a slight temperature dip to initiate pinning.

  • Substrate Choice: It is the “King of Straw,” but achieves massive yields on Master’s Mix (Sawdust/Soy Hull) or even recycled paper waste.

Quick Cultivation Facts:

  • Scientific Name: Pleurotus ostreatus (Hybrid HK-35)

  • Special Feature: Reduced Spore Load (Ideal for indoor/basement grows).

  • Fruiting Temp: 14°C – 24°C (Highly versatile).

  • Pro Tip: Because it produces fewer spores, you can let the caps grow slightly larger than usual without worrying about making a mess of your grow room.
