Bundu Castellani offers a robust, low-tech solution ideal for urban growers, off-grid setups, and tropical strains (Pink Oyster, Ganoderma, Cordyceps, etc.). It gives you both long-term dormant storage and easy on-demand liquid inoculant. Unlike conventional Castellani, that has to be transferred to Agar Plate, Bundu Castellani can be used to directly inoculaten.
What Is Liquid Inoculant (LI)?
This is distinct from Liquid Culture (LC): LC involves growing mycelium in a nutrient-rich broth (e.g. Honey, Dextrose, Peptone, malt extract), expanding its mass for later use. LC is called ‘Liquid Spawn’ in the East, and as spawn has a limited shelf life due to nutrients.
Core Principle
Bundu Castellani improves on the classic method by applying Paradigm Shift#3 – and using a SHIP-equipped bottle.
The SHIP Bottle with distilled water (or low EC bottled water) and VermiLIN Essential salts is sterilized. The mycelium enters a dormant state (similar to classic Castellani), but the VermiLIN salts allows you to “Shake-to-Activate” — instantly turning the entire contents into a high-quality Liquid Inoculant with minimal stress on the mycelium.
While traditional Castellani storage relies on plain water and a simple agar wedge, Bundu Castellani elevates the process by utilising VermiLIN for Osmotic Preservation and Selective Nutrition.

Step-by-Step Bundu Castellani Method
- Prepare the SHIP Vessel Mix and sterilize VermiLIN in the SHIP bottle – allow to cool in autoclave.
- Inoculate In sterile conditions, transfer a small healthy agar wedge into the bottle. Incubate at 23–27°C for 10-12 days
- Store Keep at room temperature in a dark place. Tropical strains do very well at room temperature.
How to Use (Shake-to-Activate)
- Shake for 10-30 seconds — to disperse the mycelium.
- Disinfect the SHIP and withdraw the desired amount of Liquid Inoculant with a sterile syringe.
- Use immediately or store short-term.
- Return bottle to room temperature storage, when reuse then a gentle shake should disperse mycelium.

Key Tips & Observations
- The ultra clear solution makes contamination (especially bacterial) instantly visible as water clouds.
- Use Red RTV silicone on the inside of SHIP lids for a true hermetic seal if self-made.
- Check every few months for cloudiness.
- Excellent results reported on Pink Oyster, Ganoderma (tropical species) after 5+ years.
STS Hack: in place of expensive distilled water, just use water from you Rain Water harvesting! Bottled water can also be used, just check label, unflavoured still water with a low EC [Electrical conductivity].
Note: When installing a conventional Self-Healing Injection Port (SHIP) into a drilled hole, please be aware that the connection is purely a mechanical interface. Under the heat and pressure of sterilisation, the port may dislodge or “pop out”. Furthermore, because mechanical seals are not hermetic, contamination can—and according to Murphy’s Law, will—eventually bypass the mechanical seal. It is therefore imperative to apply Red RTV silicone to the internal surface to bond the SHIP to the lid. This ensures the port remains secure, prevents leaks, and maintains a sterile barrier.
