RED RTV Silicone Sealant (100g)
Permanent Bonding of SHIP Ports

This high-performance RED RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) silicone sealant is the only glue we’ve found that reliably creates a permanent, flexible, waterproof bond between butyl rubber self-healing injection ports (SHIP) and polypropylene (PP) lids — even after repeated autoclaving and heavy use in mycology labs.

Why This RTV Works Where Others Fail

Polypropylene is notoriously difficult to bond due to its low surface energy and chemical resistance. Standard silicones, epoxies, and cyanoacrylates often peel or fail over time. This RED RTV formula (acetic acid cure) etches into PP surfaces during curing, forming a strong, elastic seal that withstands:

  • Autoclave cycles (Can handle over 300°C, far over 15PSI – 121°C)
  • Repeated needle punctures
  • Chemical exposure (from LC media, agar, etc.)
  • Vibration and thermal cycling

Key Features

  • Permanent adhesion to polypropylene, butyl rubber, glass, metal, and most lab plastics
  • Flexible (remains elastic after cure) — absorbs stress from needle insertion
  • High-temperature resistance — up to 360°C intermittent, 320°C continuous
  • Waterproof & airtight — ideal for sealed SHIP lids and culture vessels
  • Red color — easy to see application and inspect bond integrity
  • Cure time: Skin-over in 10–20 min, full cure 24–48 h (acetic acid odour during cure — ventilate well)

Tested & Approved at STS

At the Sustainability Testing Station (STS), we import, rigorously test, and validate this exact RED RTV Silicone Sealant for real-world mycology use. It consistently creates a permanent, flexible, waterproof bond even between butyl rubber self-healing injection ports (SHIP) and polypropylene (PP) lids — enduring through multiple autoclave cycles and heavy lab handling. No other RTV or adhesive we tested matched this reliability on PP surfaces.

Key STS Observations

  • RED RTV is noticeably softer and more elastic than white, grey, or black RTV variants — the needle does not “punch” through the butyl rubber but slips through cleanly and seals the hole perfectly on extraction, reducing leaks and contamination risk.
  • STS Tip: When wet, RTV clings to everything (including fingers). To smoothly round off and contour the bead before it sets, dip your finger in dishwashing water (a drop of dishwashing liquid in water) — it glides easily and gives a clean, professional finish without sticking.

Applications

  • Permanent attachment of butyl rubber SHIP ports to polypropylene lids (wide-mouth jars, culture bottles, spawn bags)
  • Sealing and reinforcing lids on liquid culture vessels
  • General lab repairs (flexible, high-temp seals)
