Not all sodium alginate is created equal. Many commercial alginate products are blended with sugars, carriers or anti-caking agents to improve handling and speed up dissolution. While convenient, these additives reduce the amount of active polymer available to form strong calcium alginate gels.

Typical Working Concentration
Most applications use between:
0.3–0.5% Sodium Alginate
The exact concentration depends on the desired gel strength, bead size and application.
Because this product contains virtually no inactive fillers, a little goes a long way.
STS Flash-Hydration Method
Pure high-viscosity alginate hydrates rapidly and can form surface “fish-eyes” if added too quickly.
For best results:
- Sprinkle the powder slowly into vigorously stirred water.
- Blend using a high-shear or immersion blender.
- Allow the solution to hydrate completely.
- Where sterile media are required, autoclave or pressure-cook for 10–15 minutes to complete hydration and remove entrapped air.
This produces a smooth, homogeneous alginate solution suitable for encapsulation and laboratory work.
