XA-Midnight – RIA (Rhizomorphic Induction Agar)  Media Premix – Make 7L

The Rhizomorphic “Black” Specialist (190g)

The Ultimate Rhizomorphic Engine: XA-Midnight RIA All-in-One

Stop guessing your nutrient ratios and start inducing elite fungal morphology. The XA-Midnight RIA (Rhizomorphic Induction Agar) is a professional-grade, “Solid-Spec” premix designed specifically to force tomentose (fluffy) mycelium into aggressive, ropey rhizomorphic strands.

By utilizing XA-Gel technology—a precision 50:50 blend of high-bloom Agar and Xanthan gum—this media creates a unique surface tension that allows hyphae to “glide” laterally across the plate. Combined with a lean, starvation-induction nutrient profile, your mycelium is forced to “hunt” for resources, resulting in the thick, exploratory cords every mycologist desires.

Why Choose XA-Midnight RIA?

  • High-Contrast “Midnight” Finish: Infused with ultra-fine Activated Carbon to provide a jet-black backdrop. This makes identifying the leading edge of growth effortless and ensures your lab photography is Instagram-ready.

  • The “Solid 17” Specification: While standard mixes use 12g–14g of agar, we use a 15.7g/L base, with 1% XA-Gel. This creates a firm, resilient plate that handles scalpel work beautifully and resists “sweating” in South African summer temperatures.

  • Optimized Basal Nutrients: We’ve balanced Light Malt Extract (LME), Dextrose, Peptone, and Yeast Extract to provide exactly enough nitrogen for cell wall strength without “overfeeding” the culture into lazy growth.

Ease of Use: The 3-Scoop Rule

We believe lab work should be precise but simple. We’ve dialed in the density of this premix so you can put the scale away.

  • Dosage: Add 3 Level Tablespoons (27g) per Litre of distilled water.

  • Yield: This 190g Master Bottle produces 7 Litres of premium agar.

Specifications:

  • Base: 15.7g/L High-Bloom Agar + XA-Gel.

  • Nutrient Profile: 0.74% Dextrose / 0.11% LME.

  • Additives: Activated Carbon, Peptone, Yeast Extract.

  • Volume: 320ml Media Bottle (190g Net Weight).

STS-Tip: Give your plates a 3-hour ‘Cold Snap’ in the fridge after pouring. This locks the XA-synergy, preventing surface weeping and ensuring a perfect black-mirror finish for your rhizo-transfers.

Rhizo Training

Rhizomorphic Protocol:

🧫Training Your Mycelium

Most growers assume fluffy (tomentose) mycelium is a sign of health. In reality, it’s often lazy mycelium that’s been spoiled by excess nutrients. When food is everywhere, the mycelium grows in disorganized clouds, colonizes slowly, extracts nutrients inefficiently, and delivers less vigor to fruiting bodies — resulting in lower bio-efficiency, slower grain colonization, and reduced yields.

The RIA Philosophy: Nutritional Deprivation

Midnight RIA (Rhizomorphic Inducing Agar] uses the “Search Tek.” By keeping the nutrient profile extremely lea, just 0.7–1% total – compared to 2-1.5% traditional nutrients, we trigger a survival response. Like water agar — where the mycelium stretches out desperately to find food — RIA forces the mycelium to build thick, ropey hyphae (rhizomorphs). These are the “scouts” of the fungal world: fast, powerful, and optimized for efficient substrate conquest.

The 3-Step “Rhizo-Lock” Training Program

  1. The Induction (Transfer 1) Place your culture (even a fluffy one) onto a Midnight RIA plate. The lean nutrients and XA-Gel’s high-moisture, slick surface make the mycelium glide and stretch. You’ll quickly see individual strands break away from the fluff to “hunt” for food — the first scouts emerging.
  2. The Selection (Transfer 2) Identify the most aggressive, ropy “firework” strand against the black background. Using a sterile scalpel, take a tiny wedge from the very leading tip of that strand and transfer it to a fresh Midnight RIA plate. You are now selecting for the hunters.
  3. The Lock-In (Transfer 3) By the third transfer on RIA, the rhizomorphic habit is usually locked in. The genetics have adapted to the search. When you move this “trained” mycelium to grain or production substrate, it hits with explosive, organized speed that lazy, fluffy cultures simply can’t match.

Why the Midnight Contrast Matters On standard tan agar, you can’t see the leading edge of a rhizomorph until it’s already established. On Midnight black, the white “scouts” pop against the background the moment they appear. You can spot winners before the lazy mycelium even wakes up.

Don’t grow fluff. Grow muscle.

Midnight RIA is the training ground. Standard agar is fast food. RIA is the gym. Keep nutrients lean, select the fastest ropes, and lock in the habit by transfer 3. Your trained culture will colonize grain and substrate faster, more efficiently, and with higher yields.
